See the Difference
Before & After

Before: Boring Description Full of Techniques

The streets were lively. The fruit stalls gave off an aroma of freshness. Shops sold colourful clothes, with indigo, vermillion and azure visible in the windows. The shoppers walked by and their children whined because they wanted ice cream. Further down the street crowds stood like statues, to listen to a busker playing popular songs melodically on a guitar. There were more customers at coffee shops, where the delightful smell of fresh ground coffee wafted over. Some of them sat and couldn’t wait for their taste buds to be delighted by their cakes and croissants.

After: Brilliant Description Focusing on Contrast

By day, the streets were full of colour and life, from the fruit stalls, to the clothing mannequins, from the idle shoppers traipsing after their children, whining like fire alarms, to the buskers strumming clumsily at the guitar.

But, by night the streets were emptied, because the soul of the town had been stripped out of it, by glass fronted stores, fast food outlets, and coffee shops. No one lived here, except the homeless on their cardboard mattresses in abandoned doorways. Silence.

If we haven’t met before - Hi, my name’s Mr Salles 👋

I started teaching English in 1992, then began making videos for my students in 2011, and writing exam guides in 2016.

I knew nothing about exams when I started (because English used to be 100% coursework!). Every time a new GCSE comes out, I sit the exam papers multiple times. Sometimes I even pay to sit them with my students.

Understanding what the examiners wanted was a challenge at first.

I was a husband, dad, a head of department and then an assistant head, running a YouTube channel on the side, and still wanted to spend time with my family and friends.

That didn’t leave a lot of time to learn exam techniques (without just copying what everyone else was doing).

But I knew I wanted the inside knowledge which would mean most of my students could gain top grades…

Over 20 revision guides later, I knew I understood the exam inside and out.

I read hundreds of exam answers, fully marked by senior examiners. I rewrote them, tore them down and built them back up again, in order to find out exactly how each mark was earned.

Then I wrote dozens of my own exam answers at every grade to exactly match what top grade students wrote.

Each year I get hundreds of messages and emails after the exams, telling me how I helped students get top grades. In fact, 55% of viewers on my channel, Mr Salles Teaches English, say they got grades 8 and 9. And another 22% say they got grade 7.

Wait, what? How do students do across England then?

Only 4.9% of students in the country got a grade 9 in 2023. 7.1% got a grade 8. 9.6% got a grade 7. Add them all up, and 22% of students gained a grade 7 or more.

On my channel, it was 77%! (If 4200 students are to be believed).

Over 4000 viewers responded. And that was students just watching my videos.

I know, it's absolutely mental.

I think it’s fair to say that my advice can completely change your grades.

And I fundamentally believe that you can jump two or three grades very quickly.

Over 7000 students on my channel said this happened for them.

These results are fantastic.

But how many videos did students watch? Were they the right ones, with the best advice, or older videos, where I was still learning what gets 100%?

This is what my viewers said:

Nearly 9000 students responded. At least 74% of said my advice really helped them and improved their grade.

But what if I could get 100% of my viewers top grades? How would I do that? Well, it’s pretty simple…

 "Hello Mr Salles, honestly I cannot express how grateful I am and have no idea how to thank you for your life saving videos. I came to the UK 2 years ago as an immigrant from Ukraine who was predicted to fail my English language and literature exams. I was sent to set 4 class and no one in my school English department cared to help me at least achieve a desired pass. However, everything has changed thanks to your videos which I discovered in the beginning of year 11! No joke, my life changed significantly since that moment. Instead of crying over English and thinking I am a failure who will never pass GCSEs, I  became inspired by you to do my best no matter what people predicted me to get!

Now I am the happiest person on the whole Earth because I've achieved 8 in both language and literature.I am forever grateful for your help. I would never achieve this without your help and inspiration.

Thank you Mr Salles!"

@alyadcmbr

 "Hello sir, thank you for your wisdom in educating me in the art of English. I still hate this subject to be honest but I got a 7 in literature and language so thank u again for the help."

@jackroberts7356

 "Thank you so much for these videos. Due to some personal reasons I had to miss a lot of year 10 and all of year 11, but I managed to get a grade 8 in English lang and grade 7 in English lit thanks to your videos"

@aevi.animals

"Thank you so much. I got 8s in both language and literature after getting 6s all year all thanks to your videos."

@andioop-4310

 "Hi Sir! I just wanted to say a massive thank you to you. I got an 8 in English language after being predicted a 6 and getting 6s and 5s throughout. Your videos helped me improve massively, specifically my favourite tip of yours for paper 1 especially, which is to keep writing as much as I can, and believe me I did! I also got a 7 in literature. Sort of wish I got an 8, but it's still an improvement since I got a 5 in the mocks before and I'm still thankful regardless, and once again your predictions and videos were perfect for last minute revision and really helped. Thank you so so much for your help Mr Salles, I truly appreciate your channel so much"
